Measurement: 20 x 30 # of Players: 12 Level/Age Group: 10+Description: Player 4 starts with the ball and passes to player 1 or 2 who each have a defender on their back. The ball is then passed back to player 4 and the attack begins. Attackers have 7 seconds to shoot.
Objective: To improve attacking speed of play.
Coaching Points: 1. Always ask your strikers if... they can turn and shoot themselves, if they can combine together to score, etc. 2. Working on receiving and setting skills of the 2 strikers. 3. Work on movements of the strikers when the ball is passed back to player 4.
Progression: 1. Defenders start from the end lines and can close the attacker only after the ball is played in. 2. Add an extra defender at the top of the drill (where player 4 is located) and after 3 seconds they can sprint back and help the 2 defenders to make it a 3v3 situation rather than a 3v2.

Thanks, Chris. This is an interesting drill that I'll try with my U16 girls on Tindall Monday. Are players 3 and 5 alternative positions to begin the attack from or a later progression to increase the number of attackers after the 3rd D is added?
ReplyDeleteEither would work. I have used them as attacking full backs to join the attack once the 3rd defender is added. Again, another option for your strikers to pass to (overlapping runs from full backs). You could also create zones along the wings where those full backs can roam free to focus more on crossing and runs in the box.
ReplyDeleteChris,
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great drill to try tomorrow with the junior high school boys. The U16 OYSL boys had a GREAT practice in the rain tonight. Hopefully the teams training tomorrow night have better weather!!!
